Snacks, snacks and more snacks
I bet you thought this was going to be about dog snacks, right? Nope... Shel and I decided about three weeks ago to really change our diet... we've been doing the YOU: On a Diet and although we've not really lost any weight yet, we are definately feeling better. (I suppose if we started exercising like we're supposed to, we'd have seen a larger improvement) Anyway, the hard part of the book is that a lot of the recipes are... well.. BLAH. We like a lot of spice here in NY... I don't know who tasted these recipes, but I think they had their taste buds removed... there are a few exceptions, like the salad dressing for the Mixed Greens with Walnuts, Cranberries and Feta.. THAT is yummy. Some of the snacks are pretty ok, but you get tired of nuts after a while. Shel and I went grocery shopping to find snacks that are:
  1. Free of High Fructose Corn Syrup or sugar
  2. Made with whole grains
  3. Free of preservatives
Ah huh... that was tricky. We ended up with A real treat, we discoved was Hodgsons Mills Whole Wheat Pancake mix.. these were some awesome pancakes.. next time, I'm going to make them with applesauce to replace some of the milk.. I'll bet it'll make a wonderful addition! The real bonus was that TWO pancakes filled me up.. TWO! I usually eat FIVE! Have you changed anything about your diet?

  1. I’ve been diligently working to develop healthy snack food that has junk food flavor. My best one is a dip of non fat cottage cheese, lemon juice, and spinach leaves or fresh artichokes. My efforts to develop a non sugar, whole wheat flour cracker have been pretty disastrous. Even the dogs seem to be eating them out of a sense of courtesy.

  2. Wow.. that sounds really good! … the dip I mean.

I have a recipe somewhere for lavash crackers… the tricky part is to coax the gluten out of that whole wheat flour. I’m wondering now if I can replace all or part of the bread flour..

I’m going to have to give that a whirl.. I’ll let you know how it goes!
