I love it when a plan comes together.
Last month, I was at Dr. Lesser's Chiropractic Clinic for dogs, when a regular client came in with her usual gaggle of pugs .... and one labrador. Huh?  Well, that's different. Come to find out that this lab had belonged to her brother half a country away and she had been begging him for years to let her take her home.  Evidently, he didn't really know what to do with a lab so she didn't get any exercise, never went anywhere and pretty much spent her days on the couch...  She was a bundle of nerves. Can you imagine sitting on all those years of energy? Poor thing.. she was a mess....  you couldn't look at her without her freaking out! The client said she'd tried Rescue Remedy, but it wasn't working. Well, there is a reason for that. Rescue remedy is great for shock, trauma etc.  But not for long term use. I suggested she try using Aspen and Mimulus.  One is for known fears (she knows she's afraid of the car, the door, people) and one is for unknown fears (what was that noise?! Who is this person? Where am I?) I ran into her last week and she said less than 3 days being on these Bach flowers and she was like a different dog.  She can deal and cope with things. I know that with regular positive reinforcement and keeping up on the correct bach flowers, this dog will be well on the way to being able to deal with everyday life.

  1. I would have killed for some rescue remedy over the weekend. My friends greyhound.. the one i was watching.. has thunderstorm phobias… and OMG was she a wreck. Caused major upset in the house hold with Brutus. She was forcefully clingy and he didnt like it one bit. So he spent most of the day in my room with Rufus which wasnt fair.

She calls me on her way home and I give her the report. She informs me the vet gave her DAP and she got some rescue remedy… ummmmmmmmmm why in the h e double hockey sticks didnt she send it!!!! Pop up thunderstorms all afternoon both saturday and sunday!

Needless to say, she wont be staying here again.

  2. SL,
I always keep R&R on hand.. it doesnt’ go bad!

And honestly, the DAP probably did more than the RR for thunderstorms… especially long term fear of thunderstorms…

I’ve been meaning to write about this for years…

I should really blog about it soon!
